What to Do After an Accident
Practical Steps Every Driver Should Know
Accidents happen in an instant, but the physical and financial damage can be long-term. The steps you take immediately after a car accident can help protect your right to receive insurance benefits and financial compensation in a personal injury claim.
For more than 40 years, the attorneys of Getz & Braverman, P.C., have been helping clients recover financially after car, truck and other vehicle accidents. Based on their experience, they offer the following tips for what to do after an accident:
- Check to see if anyone is injured. If so, call an ambulance.
- Get your car off the road if possible and turn on your flashers.
- Call the police to report the accident, even if it is minor.
- Exchange insurance information with the other driver or drivers.
- Write down the names, addresses and phone numbers of the others involved and any witnesses.
- Take photographs of the scene and of your vehicle if you have a camera available.
- Do not admit to any fault or accuse others.
- Do not sign anything without consulting a personal injury lawyer.
- Do not make statements about the accident or your injuries to anyone other than the police until you speak to a lawyer.
